17 – REFILL A PRESCRIPTION

NOTE: This can only be done if the original prescription was filled electronically from MedInformatix. If not, treat the refill as a new prescription.

From the Medications History, select the name of the prescription to be refilled.

Select one of the following.

  • Same Refill – will refill the medication exactly as it was originally routed.
  • Refill – will allow the User to make some changes to the original prescription.

Picture 61Select the Refill Reason for Stopping the Old Rx – This will default to ‘Refill’

Select ‘Ok’

If necessary, edit this information prior to routing the refill.

Instruction/SIG – Type in or select from the dropdown menu. Use plain English.

Do not include the following -

  • These punctuations ; > < ! \ ^ $ ? = ^ ` { | } ~
  • ‘As directed’ – use specific instructions
  • Partial dosage in numbers. (ie. ½ should be ‘half’)
  • Duplicate information (ie. as needed PRN),
  • Extraneous information (ie. Sig 1 po),
  • Information that should be elsewhere in the prescription (ie. dispense 1 tube, generic take one daily)
  • NEW IN v7.7.3
  • If the pharmacy is NCPDP2017 Ready - SIG MAX LENGTH is 1000 free text characters. Warning message for ‘140 Character Limit’ is removed.
  • If the pharmacy is NOT NCPDP2017 Ready - SIG MAX LENGTH is 140 free text characters. Warning Message for ‘140 Character Limit’ will display.

Dispense – The dispense will automatically populate if there is only one option. If not, the available packaging for the prescription will display in the top of the list in the dropdown. Other options will display at the bottom. Use numbers only in this field.

Unit of Measure is the type of unit to be prescribed (ie. ‘tablets’). This is a system default but can be changed.

Refills – up to 99

Started - Defaults to the current date.

*Days Supply is the number of days the current prescription should last.

*Auto Expire used in conjunction with ‘Days Supply’ will automatically update the Medications History and ‘Stop’ the medication on the selected date. It will default to the current date but will not Auto Expire the medication unless the date is changed.

Prescriber should be selected from the dropdown. Verify the Prescriber Name for each refill prescription.

*Diagnosis must be entered in the ‘Problem List’ prior to selection for the prescription. The diagnosis will display on printed prescriptions.

Route as desired.
